Workhorse Wes Welker deserves a little rest

With 51 receptions, 785 receiving yards and six touchdown catches already, Wes Welker has earned some time off.

He’ll get it this week, as all players on the Patriots have the next five days to do whatever they please.

But don’t expect the time to turn into a Red Sox clubhouse-style kegger. “Rest” is the key word here.

“It’s not like spring break, like we were in college or anything like that,” Welker joked yesterday. “It’s more like everybody understands we still have to go work out and still do some of those things, but not [be] out there running routes.”

Welker will go back to Oklahoma City to visit his family and friends for a few days, and then head back to Foxborough, for business as usual.

“It’s nice being in the position that we’re in,” Welker said of the 5-1 team. “And there’s still a ways to go, so by no means have we won the division or even close to it, or anything like that.

“So we’re still a long way off of where we need to be, so we’ll take a few days to relax and then really get back to work.”
