WWE Summer Slam Brock Lesnar to lose – Velveteen Dream call up?

WWE Summer Slam Brock Lesnar

After last night’s expectedly stellar NXT TakeOver, it’s now time for the biggest party of the summer, Summerslam. This year’s card has some solid matches, but WWE as a whole has been lacking in the storyline department as of late. The match with the most build would far and away be The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan, which didn’t require much effort. The story behind this match has already been written. Over the past 8 years, these two have feuded and exchanged barbs outside of the ring, the most famous of which being The Miz’s breakthrough promo on Talking Smack. Talking Smack, as you might remember, was arguably the best show on WWE Network. So naturally, they discontinued it.

The second most built up match of Summerslam would be the Universal Championship match between the reigning, defending Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. Despite trying to push this feud, and specifically Roman, on us for a few years, the WWE Universe isn’t exactly sold on The Big Dog. But all signs are pointing toward Brock finally dropping the title and making another run at the UFC Championship. As much as it would “protect the business” of pro wrestling for Lesnar to walk into a UFC Championship fight wearing the WWE Universal Championship, The Beast may not want it to be a distraction from the task at hand. It’s very possible that Roman Reigns will finally cash in on his unpopular push.

And on the subject of cashing in, we could also see Roman immediately lose that CHampionship to Braun Strowman, the Monster in the Bank (I’m not humble enough not to say that I called that moniker the moment Braun won the briefcase). But Kevin Owens may throw a wrench in those plans if he defeats Braun tonight, winning the Money in the Bank briefcase. This could be a rare occasion where the briefcase changes hands. While the idea of Strowman cashing in is fun, the unanimous perception is that he just doesn’t need it. A weaselly heel like Owens would be a better candidate, and I think a cash in on his part tonight would be a great twist in this story, destroying Roman’s journey, and would start a easy feud going forward. But hey, I’m no booker man.

That being said, call me Kevin Sullivan if I don’t see Ronda Rousey winning the Raw Women’s Championship tonight. Even if it was a conveniently quick rise to the championship, Ronda’s push has been done with class. By that I mean, she’s clearly putting in the work and making visible improvements in her ring work. Nia Jax’s initial challenge put her in the title picture early on, and while traditional wrestling fans may not like it, Rousey puts butts in seats. To not put the biggest star on your roster in championship contention would be foolish.

Our other Men’s main event is WWE Champion AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe in a TNA classic. This is sure to tear down the house considering these two have been going at it for most, if not all, of their careers. This was an obvious clash since Styles’ debut. Wrestlers who have competed against each other hundreds of times always need to come up with something creative and original in a high profile match like this. For over a decade, the two guys who were the best in the world and never going to WWE were AJ Styles and Samoa Joe. Tonight they compete at Summerslam for the WWE Championship, so this isn’t one to pass on.

Since this is one of the big four WWE events of the year, so there’s likely to be a surprise whether it be in the form of a return or a call up from NXT. Elias will be performing one of his classic songs, and is bound to be interrupted by someone with some clout. Could it be The Rock? Could it be John Cena? No, I’m thinking we might be in for a new…experience.

On last night’s NXT Takeover, The Velveteen Dream wore the words “Call Me Up Vince” on his tights. Whether this is foreshadowing or wishful thinking, The Dream is calling his shots. And much like Elias, sometimes charisma can get you on the main roster faster than winning the NXT Championship. So if Velveteen Dream were to jump into a feud with Elias, it would be both fitting and hilarious. Don’t miss what should be a pleasant surprise while we walk with Elias.
