The penultimate meeting between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox features a pair of playoff teams from the American League East trending in two very different directions.
Boston is putting together one of the greatest seasons in Major League Baseball history behind a 103-47 record. Only nine teams in league history have won more games in a single season than the Red Sox, who still have 12 games left to play.
The Yankees, who sit in second place in the division behind the Red Sox, have been nothing short of mediocre since late June.
Inconsistent play and injuries have submerged the Yankees into an insurmountable hole in the division, which eliminates any hope of them avoiding the dreaded one-game American League Wild Card Game.
While their standing as a playoff team seems safe, the prospect of them hosting the one-game playoff has fallen under siege as the Oakland Athletics are hot on New York’s tail for the top spot in the Wild Card standings.
So as Boston looks to wrap up the AL East when they visit the Bronx for a three-game series beginning tonight, the Yankees need a strong showing or else they’ll be traveling to Oakland in October to keep their season alive.
