It’s probably time for Johnny Damon to officially scratch the Yankees off his list of prospective teams.
The Yankees agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal with free-agent outfielder Randy Winn yesterday.
The former Giant fills the team’s final outfield spot, likely meaning the end of Damon’s four-year run in the Bronx.
“I’d like to come back, but there’s a lot of things that go into that decision,” Damon said shortly after the Yankees celebrated their 27th world championship in November.
Damon hit .282 with 24 home runs and 82 RBIs last season. He made $13 million and was believed to be looking for another high-priced, multi-year deal, which the Yankees had little interest in offering to the 36-year-old.
This is the second month in a row the Yankees blatantly passed up Damon. The Bombers signed free-agent Nick Johnson in December to share first base and designated hitter duties.
As for the 35-year-old Winn, who hit .262 with 51 RBIs last season for San Francisco, he could split time in left field with youngster Brett Gardner.
