Spring training roundup: Dodgers, Padres get jump on rivalry

Expected to be two of the best teams in the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres showed that nobody has the advantage quite yet, playing to a 4-4 tie at Peoria, Ariz.

Dodgers right-hander Dustin May struck out seven over 3 2/3 innings, hitting as high as 100 mph on the radar gun. Padres left-hander Ryan Weathers struck out six over three innings, but gave up three runs.

AJ Pollock and Chris Taylor hit home runs for the Dodgers, while former Dodger Manny Machado had two hits for the Padres.

Tigers 3, Pirates 1

Miguel Cabrera hit his first home run of the spring and left-hander Matthew Boyd struck out five over four innings as Detroit defeated Pittsburgh at Bradenton, Fla. The Pirates’ Kevin Newman reached base three times on two hits and a walk.

Cardinals 5, Astros 2

Dylan Carlson hit a two-run home run and right-hander John Gant gave up one run over five innings as St. Louis defeated Houston at Jupiter, Fla. The Astros’ Jose Altuve struck out in all three of his at-bats.

Blue Jays 3, Phillies 1

Riley Adams hit a home run, while Teoscar Hernandez and Bo Bichette each had RBI doubles as Toronto defeated Philadelphia at Clearwater, Fla. Bryce Harper had an RBI double for the Phillies.

Braves 8, Red Sox 2

Alex Jackson hit a three-run home run and Ehire Adrianza had three hits and drove in two runs as Atlanta defeated Boston at Sarasota, Fla. Bobby Dalbec had two hits and scored a run for the Red Sox.

Cubs 4, Rockies 2

Kris Bryant hit his first home run of the spring, while Jake Marisnick also hit a home run as Chicago defeated Colorado at Mesa, Ariz. Trevor Story had a home run for the Rockies, his fourth during spring training.

White Sox 6, Indians 2

Eloy Jimenez had a two-run double during a four-run first inning and right-hander Dylan Cease pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings as Chicago defeated Cleveland at Glendale, Ariz. Cesar Hernandez had three hits for the Indians.

Diamondbacks 6, Royals 6

Kyle Isbel, Ryan McBroom and Emmanuel Rivera each went deep as Kansas City rallied for the tie with Arizona at Scottsdale, Ariz. Stephen Vogt hit a home run and Christian Walker drove in four runs for the Diamondbacks.

Athletics 11, Angels 2

Chad Pinder and Matt Olson each had three hits with a home run as Oakland cruised to the victory over Los Angeles at Tempe, Ariz. David Fletcher had two hits for the Angels.
