Spring training roundup: Pete Alonso’s slam powers Mets past Nats

Pete Alonso hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and the New York Mets went on to an 8-4 victory over the Washington Nationals on Thursday at Port. St. Lucie, Fla.

Brandon Nimmo and Jake Hager also hit home runs for the Mets while New York starter David Peterson threw two scoreless innings.

After opting out of the 2020 season, Nationals veteran Ryan Zimmerman hit his second home run of the spring. He also had a double.

Phillies 15, Yankees 0 (8 innings)

Scott Kingery’s first-inning home run was one of six long balls on the day for Philadelphia, which won easily at Clearwater, Fla. Six Phillies pitchers held New York to three hits.

Orioles 6, Red Sox 3 (6 innings)

Ramon Urias hit a home run for Baltimore, which rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Boston at Sarasota, Fla. Jarren Duran homered for the Red Sox.

Tigers 8, Blue Jays 2 (7 innings)

Miguel Cabrera had an RBI double as Detroit rallied from an early two-run deficit to defeat Toronto at Lakeland, Fla. Forrest Wall had two hits for the Blue Jays.

Rays 5, Twins 2 (7 innings)

Tampa Bay scored runs on a sacrifice fly, two groundouts, an error and a fielder’s choice to get past Minnesota at Fort Myers, Fla. The Twins scored on a sacrifice fly and an error.

Pirates 6, Braves 1 (7 innings)

Erik Gonzalez and Joe Hudson hit home runs as Pittsburgh topped Atlanta at Bradenton, Fla. Pablo Sandoval gave the Braves the early lead on a sacrifice fly.

Rangers 5, Padres 3 (7 innings)

Joey Gallo hit a three-run home run in a four-run fifth inning and Texas rallied for the victory over San Diego at Surprise, Ariz. Nick Tanielu hit a home run for the Padres.

Giants 3, White Sox 1 (7 innings)

Joe McCarthy and Darin Ruf hit home runs two batters apart in the fifth inning as San Francisco earned the victory over Chicago at Scottsdale, Ariz. Heliot Ramos had two hits for the Giants.

Diamondbacks 9, Angels 2

Trayce Thompson, Josh Rojas, Eduardo Escobar and Daulton Varsho homered as Arizona rolled to the victory over Los Angeles at Scottsdale, Ariz. The Diamondbacks scored in each of the first six innings.

Mariners 9, Rockies 9

Casey Golden hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning for Colorado, one of a combined five long balls between the teams, to forge a tie with Seattle at Peoria, Ariz.

Indians 5, Brewers 1 (8 innings)

Aaron Civale pitched three perfect innings and Yu Chang hit two home runs as Cleveland defeated Milwaukee at Goodyear, Ariz. Mike Freeman also homered for the Indians.

Astros 14, Cardinals 0

Michael Brantley, Alex De Goti, Chas McCormick and Bryan De La Cruz drove in two runs apiece as Houston routed St. Louis in West Palm Beach, Fla. Seven Astros pitched combined for the three-hit shutout.

Royals 5, Reds 3

Ryan O’Hearn and Nick Pratto homered as Kansas City got past Cincinnati in Goodyear, Ariz. Eugenio Suarez went 2-for-3 for the Reds.

Cubs 7, Dodgers 0 (7 innings)

Michael Hermosillo, Austin Romine and Ian Happ hit home runs as Chicago downed Los Angeles in Phoenix. Nico Hoerner contributed three hits, two runs and a stolen base for the Cubs.
