St. Vincent teetering on the brink of existence

A proposal to take over financially troubled St. Vincent’s Medical Center may leave a huge swath of Manhattan’s West Side without a hospital.

Continuum Health Partners, a hospital system that includes Beth Israel and St. Luke’s, offered to take over the Greenwich Village hospital — and convert it to a community health center with outpatient care only.

It would not take ambulances or walk-in service. All acute care units, inpatient beds and surgical services would be closed.

Elected officials railed against the idea yesterday, saying that St. Vincent’s is only the ER on the West Side, from Park Row to 59th Street. St. Vincent’s was the primary spot survivors were treated after 9/11.
