Stabbing death not drug related: Cops

A stabbing death on the LRT platform at 7 Ave. and 8 St. SW Tuesday night was not drug related, police said yesterday.

Calgary’s 11th homicide victim of the year, Walter Henderson, 22, died shortly after being stabbed around 10:30 p.m. while a second victim remains in stable condition after the altercation and police nabbed their suspect Wednesday when District 8 officers recognized the man, who was riding the LRT at the time of apprehension.

Justin Allan Crowchild, 26, has been charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident and while all those involved were known to each other, Sgt. Kevin Forsen said, adding the dispute wasn’t over drugs while negating to offer any other motive.

Forsen said a beefed up police presence of city crime hot-spots, specifically at the scene of the stabbing where Gage Prevost was shoved in front of a C-Train and died in 2007, is making a difference.

“It is paying off, unfortunately we can’t put police officers on every corner all the time, if we could, we would, but resources are obviously an issue,” he said.

Crowchild will appear in provincial court on June 3.
