Stamps QB tackles hunger

This Saturday, Henry Burris wants fans to support both the Calgary Stampeders and a worthwhile charity at the same time.

The Calgary quarterback has teamed up with the Calgary Food Bank to promote the seventh annual Purolator Tackle Hunger food drive prior to Saturday night’s home game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“Cheer us on to victory and also cheer on the food drive to winning a victorious battle,” said Burris, who visited the food bank yesterday to help promote the event and sort through donated goods.

“It’s always fun, particularly when you have such an exuberant personality as Henry Burris,” said Martin Cowman, past president and longtime volunteer with the Calgary Food Bank. “He likes getting into the community spirit.”

While growing up, Burris always watched his father give back in various ways.

“I’m always going to be involved because if it wasn’t for people helping me, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Burris, who’s encouraging fans to bring a non-perishable food item or cash to donate to Purolator volunteers.

In return, fans can get their picture taken with the Grey Cup and will have the chance to win two tickets to the 2009 Grey Cup in Calgary.

“Last year, Calgary was generous and donated 42,000 pounds of food to this event,” said Jason Edwards, director of sales with Purolator. “This year, we’re really hoping to get to 50,000.”
