An armed standoff with a man in a residence in the 2600 block of 39 St. SE that forced the lockdown of three southeast schools ended peacefully yesterday evening.
Police said they were able to establish contact with the man, who reportedly had a rifle and was initially threatening the woman who called in the complaint, and they were able to coax him from the home without incident.
Still, there were tense moments for parents and students at the area schools affected by the lockdown.
Tayo Kadri, a Grade 8 student at Holy Cross School, was in gym class outside when at around 2 p.m. the teacher ushered the students inside and told them they couldn’t leave the building.
“I’m just glad to be alive,” said Tayo, who hugged his mother, Lyla Kadri, when he was able to go outside. His mom waited an hour before she could see him at 3:30 p.m.
“Calgary’s getting scary,” Kadri said. “It’s getting to the point where I don’t want to let my son stay after school.”
