Statue of Liberty crown re-opens on Oct. 28

After a year of renovations shutting out the public, Lady Liberty will finally be open to visitors of Liberty Island again, starting on October 28 — at least, part of her will.

The National Park Service had originally expected to reopen the whole Statue, including access to the pedestal and the crown, in late fall of this year.

More recent reports suggested access would be limited starting in late fall, working up to a full reopening by the end of the year.

Now the NPS is saying visitors can expect to explore the full monument by early 2013.

For now, just the crown is available to visitors, and by reservation only.

Tickets to the crown also grant access to the pedestal-observation levels and a portion of the top of the star-shaped fort at the base of the statue.

Once the whole statue is open to the public, separate tickets to the pedestal and the museum will be available as well.

Crown tickets are available now, online at www.statuecruises.com or by phone at 201-604-2800.
