Stepping into the streets, to get them out

Calgarians stepped to the streets yesterday morning in support of helping homeless youth step off the streets.

One hundred Calgarians participated in the third annual Steps OFF The Street 5-km walk and run yesterday in Inglewood and raised $3,000 to go towards The Doorway, according to director of operations Robb Price.

“This is really about raising awareness and funds to help get youth off the streets and transitioned into mainstream living,” Price said after the event.

The Doorway helps people between the ages of 17 to 24 get off the streets and into sustainable living and Price said the program has a 70-per-cent success rate.

“This is really important for them and the community really came together to show their support. It was fun and a lot of people ended up running instead of walking.”

Alberta MLA for Calgary-Montrose Manmeet Bhullar was on-hand at the event to show his appreciation.

“I think events like this help change stereotypes and perceptions and it’s really important to engage the community,” Bhullar said.
