New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard suffered a right leg injury during training camp on Wednesday morning.

According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the second-year man out of Oklahoma was in tears following his injury. He was later carted off the field:

The Giants are hopeful that he just rolled his ankle badly, according to NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo.

Shepard is coming off a solid rookie season last year after being taken in the second round of the 2016 draft.

In a passing offense dominated by Odell Beckham Jr, the speedy slot receiver built instant chemistry with quarterback Eli Manning.

Playing in all 16 games, Shepard hauled in 65 catches on 105 targets for 683 yards and eight touchdowns.

His work ethic has been something admired by head coach Ben McAdoo, who is expecting even more from Shepard this season.

“He’s still a young player, but he works at it,” McAdoo said. “He works hard, he’s always looking to learn and grow and he’s taking a nice step here in the offseason.”

This injury could bring that development to a screeching halt depending on its severity.

Should he miss an extended period of time, the Giants still have a solid duo of wide receivers in Beckham and veteran Brandon Marshall.
