The judge in the high-profile stop-and-frisk case against the city ended the trial with a bit of intrigue: namely, that she is “intrigued” by the idea of cops wearing cameras, the Daily News reported.
Manhattan federal Judge Shira Scheindlinreportedly believes that wearable cameras could remedy some of the issues associated with the controversial police practice, bycapturing exchanges between officers and citizens who accuse the NYPD of mistreatment.
The usage of wearable cameras is reportedly already being tested in other cities. Albuquerque, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Phoenix and Oakland, Calif., have secured the devices for their police officers.
The city of Rialto, Calif., is one of the first cities to observe the positive effects of officers wearing cameras. Fewer complaints were received about cops; the use of excessive force also decreased.
