Students at Senator Patrick Burns School were decked out in pink last week, raising money for their team’s donation to the CIBC Run for the Cure.
The team is made up of over 200 students in grades 5 to 9 and the school’s team has been the number 1 fundraising school since they started in 1998.
That was the year Donna Logan, the school’s physical education teacher, lost her friend Michelle Turner to breast cancer at age 30.
“I thought that (the run) would be something neat to do to remember Michelle,” Logan said.
That year they raised $5,000 and had a team of about 100 students.
Since then, Logan has continued to organize a team with her students. It’s both good exercise and a good learning experience, she said.
“We get to have fun and run with our friends. It’s good for us to get out there in the community and run the five kilometres,” said Karli Young, a Grade 7 student on the Run for the Cure team for her third year.
“We raised a lot of money for the charity.”
Logan said they’ve probably raised over $100,000 in the 11 years they’ve participated.
She said there’s a lot of school spirit around the run and fundraising efforts, and it’s good for her students because “everybody makes the Run for the Cure team.”
