Food wasn’t only found in the galley of the Edmonton Queen yesterday, as the Edmonton Food Bank commandeered the boat for their Sink the Ship food drive.
Four local schools participated in a competition to collect the most food. The contest tied in with the event. The winning school gets to take up to 150 students and teachers for a cruise on the Edmonton Queen.
“I like volunteering,” said Max Onisko, 13. “I find it fun.”
This event comes at a good time, since the food bank has a big need for donations right now.
“All of our Christmas stock is already gone,” said Debbie Theuss, who handles special events and community relations for the Edmonton Food Bank.
The organization serves 11,000 to 14,000 people every month. Forty per cent of their clients are under the age of 18.
“For an inaugural event its done really well” said Theuss. “We had a lot of fun, it was good.”
