Hurtling down an icy chute of death at speeds of up to 150 km/h may not appeal to some, but one group of teenagers were captivated by this idea.
The students of Allendale School were treated to the thrills and spills of bobsleigh Thursday as Edmonton-born Olympian David Bissett stopped by to share his journey towards Vancouver 2010.
“Expectations are a lot higher for me this year,” said Bissett. “I don’t know if I will be any more nervous than any other race.”
Olympic athletes like Bissett are matched up with a school through the Adopt an Athlete program in hopes of teaching students the value of contributing to their community by fund-raising for these athletes.
In return, the athletes visit these schools in hopes of inspiring the students to succeed in their own lives.
“It is like a one-time experience,” said Daemon Kayn, 13.
Although Kayn thinks that bobsleigh is too dangerous of a sport for him to pursue, he was motivated by Bissett’s appearance.
“He is basically saying that anybody can do anything,” said Kayn.
