Hub students outraged by the proposed MBTA service cuts are fighting back.
After T officials unveiled scenarios this week that could axe Commuter Rail trains on weekends and limit the amount of city bus routes available, Emerson College freshman Zachary Tucker decided he couldn’t stay silent.
“It isn’t going to be a good move for the city,” said Tucker, who created StudentsAgainstTCuts.org, an initiative aimed at raising student awareness about the T’s proposals to close a $160 million budget gap.
Tucker launched an accompanying Twitter account and Facebook page for the group, hoping it serves as a platform for student involvement.
“We are the ones who will be working in future jobs in Boston to support the economy and we have a responsibility to try and stop these cuts,” he said.
Tucker plans on organizing meetings with coed representatives from various Boston universities and sending delegates to the 20 scheduled public hearings over the next few months to live-tweet updates.
“I want to use social media to engage students and let them know how certain cuts could affect their schools,” said Tucker.
The group will also focus on reaching out to City Councilors and the Legislature to urge changes.
