Students wanna be startin’ somethin’

Michael Jackson may have never gotten his comeback tour, but students at Berklee College of Music are bringing his songs back to life with their original musical, “The Case of Michael Jackson.”

Set immediately after Jackson’s death, the play follows the detective investigating the case through flashback-filled interviews recounting the life of the King of Pop via song and dance. Students began planning last spring, but they knew they had to see it through after Jackson died in June, says assistant director Byung-Hoon “Brandon” Lee.

A lifelong Jackson fan, Lee hopes the play will remind audiences about the impact Jackson had on the musical world, as well as highlighting the talent of Berklee’s students and faculty.

“This is really our opportunity to show how great our music is,” Lee says. “I don’t think there’s a single person on earth who hasn’t heard Michael’s music, so it’s a big deal.”
