Style notes: Rochette skates into design role; Latifah fetes Canadian stylemakers

TORONTO – Joannie Rochette steps into design role with jewelry collaboration

Joannie Rochette is bringing her artistry from the ice to the world of style with a portion of funds from the effort going to support a cause close to the figure skater’s heart.

The Olympic bronze medallist has teamed up with Birks to design a sterling silver, heart-shaped pendant which also bears her signature.

A portion of the sales revenue will be donated to iheartmom. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute initiative aims to influence women’s attitudes and understanding of heart disease as well as raise funds for research and treatment.

The cause of heart health resonates strongly with Rochette. Her mother, Therese, died of a massive heart attack in Vancouver before her daughter competed in the Winter Games earlier this year.

Rochette joined other celebrity models at the Heart Truth fashion show last March held during Toronto’s LG Fashion Week, donning red dresses at the special showcase for heart health awareness.

At the time, Rochette said she wanted to help promote healthy lifestyles and to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke, the leading cause of death for women in Canada.

“Following the 2010 Winter Olympics and after losing my mother to a heart attack, I offered my support to the iheartmom campaign and became their spokesperson,” Rochette said in a statement. “My vision for this jewelry piece designed with Birks was that of a heart with simple, clean lines, that would represent not only the love I have for my mother, but also the importance of educating women about heart disease.”

Rochette and fellow Canadian Olympian medallist, freestyle moguls skier Jennifer Heil, are Birks brand ambassadors.


Queen Latifah to celebrate stylemakers as host of Canadian beauty industry honours

Award-winning singer and actress Queen Latifah will help pay tribute to the best and brightest of Canada’s beauty industry as host of an upcoming awards ceremony.

The Golden Globe and Grammy winner will headline the P&G Beauty & Grooming Awards ceremony in Toronto on Nov. 11.

The Oscar nominee is a familiar face on the beauty landscape as a spokesmodel for CoverGirl.

The awards honour the best in the country’s homegrown beauty, grooming and fashion editorial content in addition to leading make-up artists, hair stylists, photographers and models.

The independent judging panel includes womenswear designer David Dixon and interior designer Brian Gluckstein.
