Summer Streets 2016: giant water slide, zip lining and more

For a few glorious Saturdays every summer, the streets belong to the people. And what the people want on their streets is a giant water slide.

The Department of Transportation has heard you, and the giant water slide is back for this year’s Summer Streets, which closes 7 miles of NYC’s streets from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. for three Saturdays beginning Aug. 6.

The nearly 300-foot water slide will be at Vita Coco Beach in Foley Square (111 Worth St.), and you canregisternowfor a time slot this Saturday (make sure to arrive at least half an hour early). Or mark your calendar: Time slots for Aug. 13 open on Aug. 8, and for Aug. 20 on Aug. 15. Once you’ve taken your turn, relax in a hammock in the (real!) sand on the beach below, or play a round of cornhole.

Also back is the 165-foot-long zip line, suspended 30 feet above 53rd Street between Park and Lexington avenues. Unlike the waterslide, zip-lining is first come, first served.

While traveling by waterslide and zipline are truly living the urban transportation dream (L train alternative, anyone?) Summer Streets is also about more practical solutions. Visitors can learn to ride a bike, or just try it out on Park Avenue without cars going by, with free lessons and rentals at rest stops all along the route.

Between all the activities, there will be stops along the way with entertainment like musical performances, pop-up yoga, dancing, hands-on arts projects and more. All events are free.
