The sun is shining brightly at the University of Western Ontario, which had 954 employees who earned more than $100,000 in 2010.
The provincial Ministry of Finance released its annual public-sector salary-disclosure list Thursday. Dubbed the Sunshine list, since 1996 it’s listed the names of all public employees who earn more than $100,000.
While UWO led the pack for London’s $100K members in 2010, Frank Angeletti, chairman of Western’s board of governors, isn’t concerned.
“Western is one of the top universities in Canada, and we have a commitment to excellence to teaching and research,” he said. “As part of that, we need to recruit and retain the best faculty, staff and students so we can remain competitive.”
Coming in second for $100K employees was the Thames Valley District School Board with 286.
Bill Tucker, director of education for Thames Valley, acknowledged there was something unusual about this year’s list: Six teachers made more than $100,000 in 2010. He said that’s because teachers are allowed to set aside 20 per cent of their salary for four years and then take a year off. This year, six teachers backed out of the program and received both their saved pay and regular salary.
Coming in a distant third was London Health Sciences Centre with 202 $100,000-plus employees, followed by St. Joseph’s Health Care with 148 and Fanshawe College with 122.
