The original manuscript and unpublished watercolors will be on display until April 27.
Though known as a classic French story, author Antoine de Saint-Exupery originally set “The Little Prince” in New York City. He was living there at the time and was inspired by his surroundings so much that he weaved them into his tale about a little boy and his travels around Earth.
In the original manuscript, the prince walked our city streets and went to Rockefeller Center. These details didn’t make the published version, nor did several beautiful watercolors Saint-Exupery painted to go in the book. But you can see the rescued watercolors and original manuscript at the Morgan Library and Museum from now until the end of April.
In addition to seeing what didn’t make the book, the exhibit reveals details about the novella you might not know, such as that Saint-Exupery died in World War II during a flight he was piloting and did not live to see the book published. This and other facts about Saint-Expury’s life show that the story behind the book is just as fascinating as what’s on the pages.
