Surrey buses needed: MLA

Surrey is “severely underserviced” by public transit and desperately needs more buses to provide an alternative to driving on congested roads, according to NDP MLA Jagrup Brar.
Surrey has 83 buses to serve a population of 400,000. When Vancouver had 400,000 people there were 400 buses, the representative for Surrey-Panorama Ridge said.
Brar said he got his figures from Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts, who did not return calls by press time.
“(Watt) told me she needs 300 more buses to serve demands. Surrey is one of the province’s fastest-growing cities, yet we’re far behind in public transit.”
Vennesa Savino, 16, said her family uses the car to run errands because the bus service is inconvenient.
“The thing that bothers me is that they raised the price of the bus fares but we don’t get (more) service.”
She takes the bus from Delta to Surrey for school and waits up to an hour whenever she misses a bus.
Nora Welch, who buses from White Rock to Whalley daily for work, said the city deserves better transit
because of its larger population.
