Survivor of crash mourns family

Tears streaked Lizyanet Berry’s face as she was wheeled to the front of Central Baptist Church yesterday afternoon, to say goodbye to her husband and daughter.

“Human words don’t cut it at a time like this,” Pastor Jeremy Putz said to a packed audience of mourners. “Not in a way that builds hope when so much has been broken.”

Colin Berry, 43, and Rachel Berry, 11, were killed in a horrific highway crash in North Dakota on Aug. 11, when their vehicle crossed three lanes into the path of an oncoming semi truck.

Lizyanet, the sole survivor from the family’s minivan, escaped the collision with numerous broken bones and internal injuries.

Putz asked all in attendance to pray for Lizyanet in the “difficult days ahead.”

Grieving friends and family described Rachel as having “a laugh as beautiful as a blooming flower” and “a smile as big as the ocean.”

Colin was remembered for his devout faith in his religion and dedication to his family.

A trust fund has been set up at Canadian Western Bank to cover funeral and medical expenses.
