The following article contains some mild SPOILERS for “A Bad Moms Christmas.” So if you want to go into the comedy cold then you should proceed cautiously.
“Bad Moms” established that Mila Kunis’ Amy Mitchell, Kristen Bell’s Kiki, and Kathryn Hahn’s Carla Dunker had the same wants, needs, desires, and urges as their male counterparts.
This is a trend that continues afoot in “A Bad Moms Christmas,” but this time around Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines, and Susan Sarandon have been added to the cast as the trio’s mothers. I recently had the chance to talk about “A Bad Moms Christmas” with Sarandon, who clearly had a terrific time working on the comedy.
There was one scene in particular that caught the actress’ eye, so much so that she has already called it a classic. The scene in question sees Kathryn Hahn’s Carla waxing a particularly intimate area of Justine Hartley’s Ty Swindle, all of which unfolds for quite a while. For Sarandon, that’s exactly what made the sequence so hilarious.
“The taste of that and the tone of that and how they did it is one of the trickiest things in the movie. And you can see that [writers and directors Scott Moore and Jon Lucas] have a sense of the delicacy of how to do these things. They know how to base it in some kind of reality. You sense that [the characters are] such good people. I love that he doesn’t even flinch. All of those choices. And the very last take was when he moved her hair out of the way.”
Sarandon was even more impressed because that was the “very first day of shooting” for the pair, too, with the actress adding, “Talk about diving in.”
The 71-year-old actress clearly had a lot of trust in Moore and Lucas, as she noted that the duo always seemed to know when the actresses had gone too far, while they also gave them room to take the scene in different directions.
“You’re always that fine between going too far. But the directors encourage you to go too far, and then they reel you back or you make new choices.”
