Suspect charged in car thefts

Ottawa police have charged a 17-year-old male in relation to thefts from vehicles in the city’s west end.

At 3 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to a call of males who were allegedly breaking into vehicles in the Beatrice area of Barrhaven, police said Wednesday morning.

They arrested two suspects and recovered a DVD, a digital camera, cellular phone, and two GPS units.

Police charged a 17-year-old male with two counts of each theft, possession of property obtained by crime and mischief.

Another 17-year-old male was issued a warning under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police have noted an increase in thefts from vehicles in early 2009 compared to the same period last year, specifically in the Barrhaven, Bayshore, Lincoln Fields, and Qaulicum Graham Park areas.

Thefts from vehicles are an ongoing concern, police said, and can often be prevented by locking the door, removing valuables from view and parking in well-lit areas.
