Suspect dies in police shootout

A 21-year-old with a history of gun violence was killed in a shootout with Somerville police after he allegedly opened fire on officers trying to serve a search warrant.

Matthew Krister was pronounced dead shortly after the 6:40 p.m. gunfight at his 6 Gibbens St. home Tuesday night, authorities said.

Officers and federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives went to search the home where Krister lived with his mother, neighbors said.

When they approached him he opened fire, hitting Detective Mario Oliveira three times, authorities said. Oliveira, a 10-year veteran, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. He was in stable condition yesterday.

Neighbors on the quiet side street said yesterday that they were shocked by the incident and never noticed anything out of the ordinary at Krister’s home.

“It’s very shocking,” said one neighbor who only identified himself as Frank. “He used to shovel my sidewalk. I think the whole world’s gone crazy.”

Krister had a past arrest for armed robbery.
