Suspect in fatal stabbing granted bail

A 28-year-old man charged in the stabbing death of a Halifax man is out of prison.

Michael Ray Ells, also of Halifax, was granted bail with conditions yesterday at Halifax provincial court. Until yesterday, he had been remanded at the Burnside jail.

Ells is charged in the death of 48-year-old Robert Douglas Payne, who was found in the early morning hours of Feb. 23, suffering from a stab wound inside an apartment at 6 Foxwood Terr. in Spryfield.

Payne died in hospital.

Police say Ells was in the apartment with the victim when officers arrived and was arrested. They say the victim suffered a stab wound to the chest.

Police also say the accused and victim knew each other and it was an isolated incident.

Ells’ bail conditions include living under house arrest at a residence in Canning. He’s due back in court on May 4 for election and or plea.
