Suspect in murder gets psych evaluation

As an ex-con with a history of mental illness reportedly underwent a psychiatric evaluation yesterday for the alleged murder of 9-year-old Anthony Maldonado, an autopsy found the boy died when stab wounds to his chest perforated his left lung and his carotid artery.

Accused killer Alejandro Morales, 25, shared an apartment in Morningside Heights with an uncle of the fourth-grader. Maldonado, who lived in Palisades Park, N.J., was visiting his grandmother in Harlem and went to his uncle’s to play video games. He was reportedly stabbed over a video game.

His uncle has said that Maldonado came to his room at 3:30 a.m. Saturday after being stabbed.

Morales, who was taken to Bellevue, served two years for assault and has a lengthy record of arrests and convictions on lesser charges.
