Investigators are trying to track down a man who’s wanted for breaking into a Dartmouth home and shooting one of the residents inside during the early morning hours yesterday.
Halifax Regional Police say they responded to the shooting at 4:15 a.m. on the 200 block of Main Street, where they found a 45-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. Sgt. Nancy Rudback said the victim was hit in his “upper right leg” and was rushed to surgery.
He was in “stable condition” by late yesterday afternoon, Rudback said.
She said forensic identification team members were searching the residence “to see if there are any investigative leads.”
After the victim was rushed to hospital, police spoke with a witness who said he and the victim had both been “asleep inside the residence when their dog started to bark,” an HRP news release says.
The victim went to investigate, the witness said, and ran into an armed intruder. “A struggle took place, resulting in the victim being shot,” the release says. The witness called police and went to see what happened, at which point he also “struggled with the suspect” before the assailant ran away.
Rudback said it doesn’t appear the residents know the suspect, who was described to police as a five-foot-eight black man with a thin build. He was wearing a dark hoodie and light-coloured jeans when the incident occurred.
