A man who crashed his car into an NYPD officer’s Staten Island home later returned to say he was sorry after being arrested for DUI.
Michael Spallieri, 56, of Annadale, was headed eastbound on Drumgoole Road East when he crashed into a backyard on Brandis Avenue in Eltingville at around 12:05 a.m. Monday morning, an NYPD spokeswoman said to the Staten Island Advance. The impact left extensive damage as the car smashed through a fence and into the backyard deck and pool area. RELATED: Man arrested after Periscoping himself driving drunk: Police “We were in the pool earlier – I’m just glad nobody was in the backyard,” Louis Mester, an NYPD officer and the owner of the house, said to NBC4. Mester and his wife were asleep when they were awakened by the impact outside, the Advance added. Spallieri allegedly smelled like alcohol and was unsteady on his feet after the collision.
“He was moving around crazy. He couldn’t stand still, couldn’t keep his balance,” Mester described Spallieri to NBC4.
Spallieri returned to Mester’s house on Monday evening to apologize, claiming that he could not remember the incident, NBC4 stated. When asked if he was drunk, Spallieri said, “I don’t know.”

Mester said that drivers often were speeding on the road past the house, according to the Advance, which added that the community board has been asked to install guard rails in that area, a request which was forwarded to the Department of Transportation for approval.
