‘Suspicious’ blaze severely burns boy

An eight-year-old boy remains in children’s hospital suffering from severe burns to more than 75 per cent of his body after a “suspicious” apartment fire in Burnaby.

Firefighters arrived at the building shortly before midnight on Monday to see the lobby fully engulfed in flames and people jumping out of windows.

Three other people, including a 90-year-old woman, were taken to hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.

Matt Hall, 32, who lives in the building, said he didn’t hear a fire alarm and was awoken by a woman “pounding” on his door.

“At first I was under the impression that was a false alarm, but after seeing the smoke I went back and got my cat,” Hall said. “I heard people panicking, screaming and jumping out of the second floor window and landing on the cars below.”

The eight-year-old was rescued from the building by firefighters who treated him on the lawn as the fire raged.
