Sylvia Holden not happy with plans for namesake park

Sylvia Holden Park should be maintained and preserved, insists the park’s namesake.

Now a resident of Burlington, Vermont, Sylvia Holden spent more than 20 years volunteering and promoting recreational facilities in the Glebe.

After leaving Ottawa to care for her ailing mother, the community green space immediately south of Lansdowne Park was renamed Sylvia Holden Park in her honour in 1995.

That park may now be folded into the larger public space that will be the front lawn of the new Lansdowne Park and the 80-year-old is not happy about that.

Community parks in the Glebe, like Sylvia Holden Park, are rare, she said. “Except for school playgrounds and the odd vacant lot, there is not much room.”
