T Advisory Board warns against Question 3

The MBTA Advisory Board is warning that passing Question 3 on Tuesday, rolling back the state sales tax from the current 6.25 percent to 3 percent, would most likely result in major service cuts and fare increases on the T.

Of the MBTA’s $1.62-billion operating revenue for next fiscal year, only 34 percent comes from fares and parking fees while much of the remainder comes from state and local subsidies, with 57 percent coming from the sales tax.

“If Question 3 passes, the MBTA is all but certain to lose this additional funding, forcing the very fare increases and service cuts that the sales tax increase precluded two years ago,” the Advisory Board’s report said.
