T eyes sale of Newton station

A piece of the MBTA is up for sale as the transit agency scrambles to deal with looming debt issues.

According to T spokesman Joe Pesaturo, the MBTA is trying to get rid of the Newton Centre Station Depot on Union Street.

The minimum asking bid for the property, which was erected in 1900, is $700,000.

Listed on the National Historic register and recognized by the Newton and Massachusetts Historic

Commissions, Pesaturo said while the depot building itself is being offered for sale, the station, including platforms, ramps, and stairs, will remain the property of the MBTA.

Whoever buys it will also have to honor an existing contract with the buildings occupier, a diner restaurant tenant.

The lease for the restaurant is effective until 2022, according to Pesaturo.

Pesaturo said The MBTA is “statutorily obligated to do everything it can to maximize non-fare revenue.”

As the state’s second largest property owner, the MBTA has many opportunities to offer properties for sale or lease if the transactions have no direct impact on the T’s core mission of delivering safe and reliable transit services, he said.
