Taiwanese juggling act dazzles city hall crowd

City hall was alive with colourful costumes and happy children Thursday as it hosted the Wufu Elementary School’s Diabolo Team.

The juggling act from Taiwan was friendly and jubilant, performing for a crowd that included Mayor Stephen Mandel.

The diabolo is a juggling prop consisting of a spool twirled and thrown on a string attached to two sticks. The tricks range from basic to impressive, and can be performed by one student or as a group effort.

“I hope through cultural activities, kids from Taiwan can understand Canadian culture,” said Marie Yen, Wufu Elementary’s principal.

“Maybe this can start something, touch your heart.”

Mandel enjoyed a few minutes of the performance before resuming his daily duties.

“It’s wonderful when young people from around the world entertain us with their skills. I’m amazed at their talent,” he said.

Wufu Elementary has been promoting diabolo in front of crowds since 2001. Every student can play diabolo, and they have numerous competition awards as proof of their abilities.

The group has three more performances this week, including two Friday at West Edmonton Mall. For more information, visit tuaaac.org.
