Targeted treatment helps cancer patient

In 2002, Ottawa resident Jeannot Rodrigue was diagnosed with a tumour on his right kidney.

When doctors told him it was kidney cancer, the then-55-year-old physical education teacher at Colonel By High School was shocked.

“I was very active in a lot of sports, had a proper diet and I didn’t smoke,” he said.

Two years later, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in his lungs.

Recently, the Ontario government extended funding to a new targeted kidney cancer treatment, Torisel, which Rodrigue — who is well thanks to targeted therapies — said he will likely have to use at some point.

“This is great news,” he said.
