The Australian wine scene is changing, and you can meet its rising stars this week in New York City. The first-ever Australian Wine Week (through Sept. 15) wants to introduce the city to wine as it’s made now.
The fruity sunshine-in-a-bottle varietals and sweet rieslings that popularized the country’s wine scene in the ‘80s have given way to new flavors as production shifts to cooler areas and entirely new wine styles being explored. Think: Tasmanian bubbly, sauvignon blanc from the banks of Western Australia, and the Barossa Valley’s well-known Shiraz grapes seeing a little Cabernet action.
During Wine Week, restaurants all over the city will showcase a handful of revered as well as up-and-coming winemakers from Australia, as well as special paired dishes by Aussie chefs working here in the city like Lucky Bee’s Matty Bennett and Rupert Noffs (Lucky Bee) and Giles Russell (Two Hands). At modern Australian fine dining spot Burke & Wills, chef Rodrigo Nogueira is serving a seven-course tasting menu with wine pairings ($75).
Here’s the full list of participating restaurants, which are serving Aussie wines by the glass through Sept. 15. Additionally, Chelsea’s upscale pizza nook Company will be pouring them through next week as well.
