Teen arrested in murder

A teenaged boy from the Williams Lake area was arrested Saturday night in connection with Halifax’s first homicide of the year.
Police responded to 41 Cowie Hill Rd. just before 4 a.m. Saturday after reports a man had been stabbed.
They found a young man with stab wounds in the lobby of the building.?An ambulance transported him to the QEII Health Sciences Centre where he later died of his injuries.
Halifax Regional Police yesterday identified the man as 21-year-old Paul Charles Lawrence Saunders, who is originally from Halifax but had most recently been living in Quebec. He was apparently in the midst of moving back to HRM.
Acting public affairs officer with Halifax Regional Police, Const. Tanya Chambers, said few details about the incident could be released because of the ongoing police investigation. She did confirm it was not a random act of violence.
“It is believed at this point that the victim and the suspect were known to each other and may have had mutual acquaintances,” she said.
Merida Scott, who lives in the building, said she heard the stabbing occurred on the third floor but other residents were speculating it happened in the elevator because it was “just full of blood.”
Scott, in her 70s, said many of the building’s residents are seniors and the news of the homicide was quite frightening. “We’re all really upset here,” she said.
But having police around the complex is nothing new, she said.
“There’s a lot of dope in here and a lot of drinking,” she said.
A heavy police presence remained at the Herring Cove apartment building yesterday while investigators collected evidence.
