Staying in the Boston area this February break? Check out these 10 ways to keep your kids from being bored without breaking the bank.
1. Go to the zoo
Both Boston-area zoos are offering special programs from Feb. 15-19. At theStone Zooyou can catch educational sessions at 11 a.m. and talk with a zookeeper at 1:30 p.m. In honor of President’s Day and November’s election, families can learn about animals and vote for which should become president at theFranklin Park Zoo. Regular zoo admission prices apply (Stone Zoo – children ages 2-12: $11.95, children under 2: free, adults: $15.95. Franklin Park Zoo – children ages 2-12: $12.95, children under 2: free, adults: $19.95).
2. Celebrate winter on the Boston Common
TheChildren’s Winter Festival, hosted by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, will feature a snow tube slide, a life-size snow globe and a DJ from Magic 106.7. The L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery School will also offer activities such as a Snowshoeing Discovery Course. The festival is free to attend, and will take place on Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
3. Get artsy at the Museum of Fine Arts
Explore world music and make your own art at theMFA, where daily activities will allow your kids to get their creative juices flowing. Story hours and guided tours of musical art are offered as well. Admission for children is free; regular admission price for adults ($25).
4. Celebrate Presidents’ Day at the JFK Library & Museum
ThePresidents’ Day Family Festivalteaches visitors about Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Abigail Adams amid thematic arts and crafts. The festival, which takes place on Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will culminate in a concert by the Harvard Din & Tonics. The event is free for those under 17, and regular museum admission applies for adults ($14).
5. Go ice skating
Highland Street Foundation is hostingfree ice skatingat Frog Pond from Feb. 15-19 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Boston Red Sox mascot and Curious George will make appearances.
6. Head to the Boston Public Market
Learn to make pasta, attend an apple tasting, plant daffodils and more at theBoston Public MarketFeb. 17-21. Events are either free or cost $35 per child.
7. Adventure underwater at the New England Aquarium
Theaquarium’s new exhibit on shark breeding and the shark nursery will be arriving just in time for February vacation. Regular admission applies (ages 3-11: $17.95, under 3: free, adults: $26.95).
8. Brush up on your history at the Old State House
Travel back in time to where the Massachusetts Bay Colony housed its government in 1713. TheOld State Houseis hosting a scavenger hunt, story time and historical arts and crafts from Feb. 15-19. Children 18 and under are admitted for free with purchase of adult admission ($10).
9. Check out Quincy Market
Quincy Marketis offering puppet making, story time, crafts and more during school vacation week. Programs are free and take place between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Feb. 15-19.
10. Boston Children’s Museum
During February vacation you can take your kids to see “The Tale of the Three Little Pigs,” check out Japanese House tours and partake in a building adventure at theBoston Children’s Museum. Regular admission prices apply (ages 1 and up: $16, under 12 months: free).
