Terror plotter’s imam avoids jail

A Brooklyn imam, who helped wannabe terrorist Najibullah Zazi, avoided jail time, but has to leave the country in 90 days.

Imam Ahmad Afzali admitted he lied to federal agents who were looking for Zazi last fall, after the FBI uncovered Zazi’s plans to bomb the New York City subway.

Afzali claimed he never told Zazi the feds were looking for him. But he later admitted he did tip off Zazi. His attorney, Ron Kuby, said the FBI trapped Afzali into lying.

“Honest to God, it was never my intention to help those idiots for what they do in the name of Islam,” Afzali told a federal judge.

He faced up to six months in jail for the crime, but was ordered instead to self-deport within 90 days. Afzali, who was born in Afghanistan, said he didn’t know where he would relocate and that the U.S. is the only home he’s ever known.

Zazi, who once ran a breakfast cart, is accused to plotting to blow up Times Square or Grand Central around the eighth anniversary of 9/11. Two former high school classmates helped him, police say.
