Terrorism charges laid

After a year of surveillance by RCMP, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and police forces in Ottawa, Quebec and London, Ont., three Canadians face charges in an alleged terrorism plot that police say had reaches in Canada, Afghanistan, Dubai, Iran and Pakistan.

Ottawa residents Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, 30, and Misbahuddin Ahmed, 26, are among those charged. The RCMP said Thursday it believes that Alizadeh is a member of a terrorist group with links to the conflict in Afghanistan.

Police have also charged Khurram Syed Sher, 28, of London, Ont.

“This group posed a real and serious threat to the citizens of the National Capital Region and Canada’s national security,” said RCMP Chief Supt. Serge Therriault. “Our criminal investigation and arrests prevented the assembly of any bombs and terrorist attacks from being carried out.”
