The 7 Train third-rail mystery: Did fallen umbrella cause shutdown?

Is a fallen umbrella ella ella to blame for today’s 7 train service disaster?

City and MTA officials are giving mixed messages on that question after the entire line ground to a halt, leaving rush hour commuters stranded for more than two hours in tunnels and on elevated tracks, high above the city’s slushy streets.

Joe Esposito, the head of City Hall’s emergency management command, was fairly definitive.

“Someone dropped an umbrella on the track, it hit the third rail and knocked out the servers. Then what happened because of the non-running of the trains, an icing condition built up on the rails, so then we had to de-ice those rails,” he told reporters.

MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said NYC Transit is still investigating and far from certain.

Adding to the intrigue — and frustration — is the umbrella ella ella incident happened in Manhattan at 9 a.m. but a stalled train that took the agency hours to tow, broke down near Queensboro Plaza at 10 a.m.

In all, the agency said, 5 trains got stuck between stops and passenger aboard them had to wait two hours to two hours to be rescued.

We’re not sure what to make of all this — other than that plan to increase the fare from $2.50 to $2.75 is hard to swallow.
