The beginnings of a great race

In any other season, all eyes would be on the Red Sox and the race for the AL East.

But this isn’t any other season. Not with the Bruins four wins from their first Stanley Cup in decades.

Once the B’s are done, though, things are going to get very fun on the diamond.

Heck, they already are.

After the Sox’ 7-3 loss to Chicago last night, Boston sits in a virtual tie with the Yankees in the division. The Sox (30-24) have one more win; the Yankees (29-23) have one less loss.

Both are very good at home, but just mediocre on the road. Both can score runs in bunches, and both have gotten solid pitching contributions from unlikely sources (Bartolo Colon? Really?).

And assuming the Indians fall back to Earth soon — which they will — it’s basically the race for the top seed in the AL playoffs.

Yes, this is going to be fun.
