House Speaker Nancy Pelosi clapped at President Trump during his State of the Union address on Tuesday and it quickly became a viral meme on Twitter. 

Nancy Pelosi clapped sarcastically after President Trump urged Americans to reject the politics of “revenge, resistance, and retribution, and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise, and the common good.”  It was at that moment her gesture became a meme. 

People quickly took to Twitter to share their own interpretations about what the clap meant. If you search the hashtag #PelosiClap, you’ll find a trove of tweets dedicated to it. 

The Washington Post described Pelosi’s applause directed at President Trump as “exquisite shade” in a headline about Pelosi’s now-famous clap at President Trump.  

“Her applause was sparing, weary, and had the distinct vibe of a parent applauding a kindergartner for tying his shoes when the only goal is to quickly scoot him out the door, style columnist Monica Hesse wrote in a recent article.
