What a week for the Bill Belichick coaching tree.

Nick Saban won his third BCS National Championship Monday night as his Alabama Crimson Tide trumped LSU 21-0 with a phenomenal defensive effort. Saban is the first head coach to win three BCS titles.

Saban was an assistant for Belichick in the 1994 season with the Cleveland Browns before being hired as head coach at Michigan State.

Romeo Crennel, Belichick’s former defensive coordinator, was officially named head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs Monday.

Bill O’Brien, the Patriots offensive coordinator since 2009, was named head coach at Penn State over the weekend. Josh McDaniels, the Patriots offensive coordinator from 2006-08, returned to New England this week to take over for the departing O’Brien.

Red Sox: According to MLB.com, the Red Sox have hired longtime Mets coach Randy Niemann as a staff assistant.

Niemann was on Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine’s staff in New York for the Mets from 1997-99.

Celtics: Jeff Green’s surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm “went great,” according to head coach Doc Rivers.

Green is expected to be healthy enough to return to basketball for the 2012-13 season. When he does return he will be an unrestricted free agent.
