The hunt for red, red wine

Finally, a bottle of red to go with my many bottles of white.

My quest at the 2011 Boston Wine Expo, held last weekend at the Seaport World Trade Center, was to find a red wine that I could savor as much as those on my long list of sweet, fruity, refreshing white wines.

I am happy to report I have found my match in Moscato.

My favorite, That’s Amore Moscato from Italy, is not yet available in Massachusetts — but the handsome man pouring it assured me it would be soon.

Here are some of my other faves of the day, which despite my desire to branch out, are still mostly whites.

1 Longhurschlong Riesling from California lives up to its winning slogan of “Freaking awesome wines!”

2 Oh…Schist! Riesling from Germany was also a pleasure on my palate. Its eye-catching name is a play on words describing the rocky soil, or schist, that the vines are grown in.

3 The large variety of ice wines blew my mind. From red to rose to white, they were like candy in my glass. My favorite was Casa Larga Vidal Blanc from the Finger Lakes of New York, but it’s also not yet available in this state. The runner up was Neige Premiere, an apple ice wine from Quebec, which is the yummiest apple juice I’ve ever tasted.
