The list of the world’s top 1,000 universities is out and you won’t be surprised who’s at the top

We’ll give you one guess as to which U.S. university topped the 2017 list ranking by the Center for World University Rankings of universities around the globe: that’s right, it was Harvard.

Harvard’s top spot surprises no one — the Ivy League school captured the No. 1 position for the sixth consecutive year. Stanford and MIT completed the United States sweep for the top 3 places on the list of the top 1,000 universities in the world.

The University of Cambridge in the U.K. placed fourth and the University of Oxford followed in fifth place.

“The U.S. remains the dominant force in higher education worldwide, claiming the top three spots, eight of the top 10, and 54 of the top 100,” Dr. Nadim Mahassen, President of the Center for World University Rankings, said. “It leads with 225 universities represented in the top 1,000, followed by China with 97, Japan with 71, the UK with 65 and Germany with 57.”

This year the Center for World University Rankings evaluated more than 27,770 degree-granting institutions based on eight objective indicators covering education, alumni employment and research to compile the list of the best 1,000 best universities in the world.

The quality of education, alumni and faculty are weighted most heavily in determining rank.

The number of major international awards, prizes, measures the quality of education and medals alumni have won (relative to the university’s size).

Alumni employment is based on the number of past students who have held CEO positions at the world’s top companies, and the quality of faculty is factored based on international awards, prizes and medals won by academics.

Publications, influence, citations in highly-cited journals, the number international patents, and an institution’s broader impact are also considered in weighting its rank.
