The Celtics rolled out the red carpet.

The Thunder all but begged him to stay.

But, following the tradition set forth by LeBronJames in 2010, Kevin Durant —one of the three best basketball players on the planet —will chase a title with the Golden State Warriors.

Durant announced his decision to sign a two-year, $54 million deal with a player option Monday morning on ThePlayersTribune.com.

“The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player — as that has always steered me in the right direction,” Durant wrote on the website he co-owns. “But I am also at a point in my life where it is of equal importance to find an opportunity that encourages my evolution as a man: moving out of my comfort zone to a new city and community which offers the greatest potential for my contribution and personal growth.

“With this in mind, I have decided that I am going to join the Golden State Warriors.”

Interestingly, Durant joins the very team that defeated Oklahoma City in Game 7 of the Western Conference Final in a series many believe saw Durant, Russell Westbrook and the Thunder choke.

The Warriors fell to the Cavaliers in seven games in the NBA Finals less than a month ago, attempting to defend their 2015 title. Golden State’s packed roster already boasts MVP Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and a cast of talented role players. One of these is heading to the Mavericks, as Harrison Barnes is expected to ink a max deal with Dallas.
